A powerful and personal exhibition of photography and stories produced by a group of Ukrainian women is coming to Alton having moved an Oxford audience.
Unbowed: Stories of Ukraine is coming to the Allen Gallery next Friday hot on the heels of a well-received showing in the Kendrew Barn Gallery at St John’s College.
Its producers were taught portrait photography by award-winning Kyiv photojournalist Natalia Sharomova after meeting through an arts-for-wellbeing programme hosted by Creative Response Arts in Farnham.
Group tutor and exhibition curator Natalia led women having been part of the Ukraine art group set up in November 2022.
The project records their personal experiences of leaving their homes, friends and families in Ukraine, living in the UK, and the ongoing trauma of the war.
All the photographs in the part Lottery-funded exhibition which debuted in Farnham in March were taken by members using their newly acquired skills.
Each portrait is accompanied by a translated personal story with all telling tales of extraordinary resilience and fortitude, while also relaying a much wider narrative.
The result is a photographic story of how people can come together in times of crisis to work together and help each other to overcome hardships while enriching lives.
The Unbowed: Stories of Ukraine exhibition will run at the Allen Gallery until Thursday, September 19, free entry. It is part of a month of exhibitions, talks and films by and for the Ukrainian community.
Future events include a special film screening of the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Days in Mariupol next Saturday, September 14. The film is an unflinching and harrowing account of the human toll in the south-eastern Ukrainian city during a relentless Russian bombardment in 2022.
Tickets are £6-7, for more details and information about other Allen Gallery events visit www.hampshireculture.org.uk
