Petersfield’s women’s section faced a double header against the Isle of Wight on Saturday.

Petersfield’s women’s first team hosted the Isle of Wight’s first team, while Petersfield’s second team donned their red away strip and took a ferry to Ryde to play the Isle of Wight’s second team.

The Isle of Wight claimed the spoils in the first-team match, running out 3-1 winners.

The visitors started strongly, pilling on the pressure from the first pushback and scoring early on before the unfamiliar defensive trio of Greenaway, A Stratton-Brown and O'Sullivan had a chance to settle.

Petersfield got more into their groove, and as the half progressed they started to build attacks through some incisive passing by their midfielders. Fizz Easton worked tirelessly in the midfield, was constantly available and offered options to her team-mates. Although the visitors defended Petersfield’s free hits with a well-organised press, Greenaway countered with some confident aerial balls into the middle of the pitch.

As the end of the first half approached, a swift attack up the right saw Anji Hedges drive into the D. She swept the ball goalwards and a deflection off an opposition stick put the ball in the back of the net.

The last few minutes before half-time saw Petersfield miss a golden opportunity to take the lead. A pinpoint ball to the back post from Easton saw O'Kelly fail to put it in the goal and the score remained 1-1 at half-time.

The second period began strongly for the home side, and despite their lack of substitutes, they upped their efforts and almost took the lead in the first few minutes of the half. Beaton, pushing forward up the left, found G Stratton-Brown, who in turn played a deft ball across the Isle of Wight goalmouth. Some last-ditch defending from the visitors was just enough to prevent debutante Edgar getting on the scoresheet.

Although dominating a lot of the central play, Petersfield couldn't find their finishing touch against a cohesive Isle of Wight backline. Visits into the D were proving fruitless for both sides, and Petersfield goalkeeper Temple pulled off a succession of fine saves.

It was looking like the home side might hang on for a draw, but a final burst of two goals in the last four minutes saw the contest finish 3-1 to the visitors.

Petersfield’s women’s second team picked up a welcome 3-1 victory away at the Isle of Wight’s second team on Saturday.

The visitors fell behind early on, but responded positively and upped their game. D Day went on a surging run down the right wing and played a perfectly-weighted pass into the D, and Anna Stratton-Brown was able to sweep in the equaliser.

The young trio of Day, Thomas and Franklin put relentless pressure on the home team with some impressive passing as they progressed up the pitch.

Multiple corners were awarded for Isle of Wight infringements in the D as they struggle to withstand the attacking waves. Eventually Z Thomas was able to score two further goals, securing a much-needed win for Petersfield.
