Aldershot Town manager Tommy Widdrington couldn’t hide his delight after the Shots caused another FA Cup upset by knocking out League Two leaders Stockport County.
The Shots had already beaten Swindon Town 7-4 in the first round of this season’s FA Cup.
After drawing 2-2 at home to Stockport in the second round, Olly Scott’s 88th-minute goal sealed a 1-0 win at Edgeley Park in the replay to set up a trip to Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion in the third round on Sunday, January 7 (2pm).
“I’m delighted for everybody – the players, the staff, the board and directors and the chairman,” said Widdrington.
“Since the day I walked in the building it’s been nothing but positive and I think that emanates through the team.
“We’ve gone toe to toe over two games with the best team in League Two at this moment in time and I don’t think there was a lot between us over the two games. We put in a really good shift on and off the ball.
“I’m delighted for the travelling Shots. To come this far on a Wednesday night in December a week and a half before Christmas is – it’s got to be the best Christmas present ever.
“I’m delighted for Olly – he’s been really patient. He’s struggled with a bit of an injury on and off since he’s come to the club but he’s a valued member of the group and I’m delighted for him and that we all move forward together.
“There are no words I can probably use to describe how I’m feeling. It’s the first time as a manager I’ve got to the third round of the FA Cup and to do it against a team that I think is the best team in League Two is a real achievement for my group.
“I’m delighted with the result and I’m delighted with the performance. Sometimes performance and result don’t match but I thought we just edged it. We got a goal and we could have scored one or two others.”
Widdrington is looking forward to the trip to West Brom.
“We’ll go there and enjoy the day but we want to go there and be competitive,” he said.
“How West Brom approach the game I don’t know, but we’ll get to watch them over Christmas before we play them so we can have a gameplan.
“We’re starting to get players back who at the beginning of the season would have probably been in my starting 11, and that means my bench is going to get stronger. If the bench is getting stronger that means the team have to keep doing what they’re doing.
"I don’t think we need to expect too much more in terms of level of performance, but if we can keep a consistency then I see great things for the group.”
