Villagers have shown a lot of love to a lollipop man who was nearly knocked over by an inconsiderate motorist by the school gates in Holybourne last week.

The headteacher of Andrews Endowed Primary School wrote to parents last Wednesday after Paul Susans was nearly knocked over the previous morning.

Mr Susans later confirmed he was “fine” after thanking concerned residents and parents for their kindness after the incident, which has been reported.

“The school’s headteacher and staff have also been most supportive, and I’m very grateful to be able to work in a loving, caring and friendly environment,” said Mr Susans.

The incident took place near the gates of the school.

No-one was hurt but the close call has served as a “stark reminder” of the dangers with headteacher Gemma Gundry urging parents to respect the speed limit and the double yellow lines around the school.

She said: “I fully understand the pressure of dropping children off and then rushing to get to work on time, but it only takes one moment of carelessness for lives to be shattered.

“We want to avoid any accidents or tragic consequences that could devastate families within our community.”

The school is a strong advocate of road safety awareness and led a campaign early this year against proposed HCC cuts to crossing patrols.

They have now joined forces with The White Hart as the pub has offered the use of their grounds as a park and stride area, allowing parents to park a short distance away and walk their children to safety.
