Firefighters from two counties joined forces to battle a blaze on a farm near Medstead last weekend.

There were fields of fire off Rookwood Lane last Saturday with the blaze breaking out in standing crop around midday.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue received more than 15 emergency calls with crews from Winchester, Eastleigh, Alton, Bordon and St Mary’s Southampton all attending.

They were accompanied by their counterparts from Surrey Fire & Rescue Service while specialist off-road support vehicles were deployed from Fleet and Rushmoor.

The blaze which involved 36 hectares of standing crop was quickly surrounded and extinguished. The incident was then scaled down with the remaining firefighters damping down the scene.

There were similar scenes in the Meon Valley the previous weekend as a fire destroyed a catering tent on the Bereleigh Estate with crews from Horndean, Petersfield and Havant attending along with a water carrying vehicle from Bordon.

The fire in a pizza oven was the cause of the blaze with a horsebox also being destroyed.

“A number of cylinders were involved, with crews working to cool them and reduce their temperature,” said a spokesperson for HRFS, adding that ten emergency calls were received.

“Crews worked to cool and reduce the temperature of a number of gas cylinders inside the marquee. Firefighters left the scene at around 7am.”

Although the fire at The Dell site in East Meon was a setback it was soon business as usual with the site and its popular Maize Maze being opened to the public by the following Thursday.
