A bicycle mechanic has begun a chain reaction in Alton as a series of free workshops geared towards women has been a success.

The four bicycle maintenance workshops held by Cycle Alton in the community centre were run “by women, for women”.

They were led by experienced bicycle mechanic Hilary Hill with the aim of passing on bike maintenance skills and building confidence.

The topics covered by Hilary, who has taught bicycle maintenance in Alton College and runs her own bike repair business, included pre-ride safety checks, brake adjustment, gears and fixing punctures.

“It has inspired me to get back on my bike,” said Alison Fry while Gill James lauded the “supportive” teacher.

There’s a waiting list for future sessions but requests can be submitted to [email protected]

Cycle Alton wants to thank the Alton Lions, district councillor Barbara Tansey for funding and local cyclists for use of their stands.
