Petersfield Golf Club’s ladies held their annual Niki Hogan Breast Cancer Now Day in memory of Niki, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1995, and Rona Mitchell, who died of cancer last year.

All 34 ladies competing in the stableford competition wore pink and received a pink goodie bag. Afterwards, the golfers were treated to pink cupcakes made by club chef Russell Orme and his team, and other lady members joined the players in the clubhouse.

Lyn Criddle won the event for the second time with a score of 41 points. Sandra Johnstone was second with 38 points and Ann Saunders was third with 37 points.

Rona’s husband Ian and his family attended the tea party and ladies’ captain Heidi Oliver announced that Ian, also a club member, and his family would be donating a new trophy for future years and the annual charity event will be known as the Pink Ribbon Trophy. Rona won the event in 2022 before cancer struck.

The raffle included prizes donated by club professional Ben Wall and local companies. One of the prizes, a golf chipper, was donated back and auctioned off for £40. The event raised more than £1,100.

Ladies’ vice-captain Jackie Carter, who organised the day and presented the trophy to Criddle, said: “What a great day and huge thanks to everyone who played, donated and helped.”

Oliver thanked her vice-captain for organising the day.

Oliver said: “With time comes change, so after almost 30 years this has been the final Niki Hogan Competition.

“Niki will never be forgotten and the honours board will remain on the wall in the clubhouse.

“Last year our dear friend Rona Mitchell also lost her life to cancer. It was very sudden, and we all miss her.

“From next year, a new Pink Ribbon Trophy is to be played when we will remember not only Niki, but also Rona and anyone else who has been affected by cancer. And by holding this annual competition we ensure their legacy continues to inspire and make a difference to this terrible disease.”
