Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson was left feeling frustrated after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Moneyfields in the Isthmian League South Central Division.

Town dominated possession and territory against Moneys, but were unable to claim all three points against well-organised opponents.

“It was a flat night,” said Johnson.

“We dominated every aspect of the game and missed two clear-cut sitters that have got to go in.

“We gave a criminal goal away which deflated the second half and we didn't do enough to win the game.”

Farnham nearly took the lead early on when Adam Liddle fired over the bar from close range, and Johnson felt an early goal might have opened the game up.

“If that goes in it's a slightly different game,” said Johnson.

“Moneyfields were another team who came and sat behind the ball and had no interest in doing anything.

“We found it difficult.”

The score remained goalless at half-time, and Johnson said he asked for more from his side in the second half.

Town duly took the lead through Owen Dean’s goal, but the visitors got back on level terms three minutes later when James Franklyn’s effort deceived Farnham keeper Hugo Sobte.

“We needed to move the ball with a bit more tempo in the second half when we passed it forward and try to exploit the sides because there was a lot of space there,” said Johnson.

“We came out, started quite quickly and got the goal.

“It looked like we would go on and win the game by two or three, but the equaliser was a killer – it deflated everyone.

“I don't like being critical of the players because I back them all the time but Hugo has got to step back and catch it – it's as simple as that.

“I think it deflated the boys, especially after not playing for so long and trying to get going again.

“We couldn't get going.

“We made substitutions and I think they freshened it up a little bit but we lacked in the final third.

“Great Evans has got to put the one away six yards out but it's gone wide, and Jordan Stepney has had a free header from a corner.

“It wasn't to be.”

The Moneyfields game was Farnham’s first for three weeks after a number of postponements.

Town hadn’t played since losing 3-1 at home to National League South outfit Dorking Wanderers in the Surrey Senior Cup, and Johnson admitted that his side naturally lacked match sharpness after such a long break.

“It's been a long time without playing,” said Johnson.

“Moneyfields have been playing pretty much every week with the 3G they've got and the fixtures that fell for them.

“It's going to take us another couple of games to get into our stride but we've got to pick up the wins.

“As we get into our stride we've got to find a way of winning these games.”

Town now face a relentless run of Saturday and midweek fixtures for the next month, and Johnson hopes his side will make the most of the busy schedule.

“There's only two or three midweeks left in our calendar so we've got to hope the weather is good to us and we start getting these games on,” said Johnson.
