Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith saw plenty of room for improvement after his side beat Stansfeld 1-0 in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup at Westfield Lane on Saturday.
George Winkworth’s first-half header was enough to set up a tie at home to Balham in the preliminary round on Saturday, August 17 (3pm).
“The important thing for the club was to get through for the money, which we've done,” said Smith.
“We’ve given ourselves something to look forward to, which is another home game against Balham.
“In my opinion we weren't good enough. We had a level of control in the first half without creating anything. People went through the motions. There was no intensity.
“The second half was embarrassing because they (Stansfeld) should have equalised. Although we had two or three chances at the end we haven't taken them.
“We had no control in the second half. People's performances were poor. It's something for us as a management team to think about because I'm not going through the season like that.
“There was a couple of good performances. I'm not going to name names but they are players I expected to perform because they're quite consistent.
“It looked like we could and should have scored three or four goals if we had upped it, but we didn't. We didn't have the quality.
“If we had got a second the game might have been different but we didn't look like doing that until the final 20 minutes when we had a couple of breaks.
“We're a very young group and the confidence they need to take is that we've won the game. They might not feel confident after what I've said but we have won the game. That was the most important thing. We should be winning that game comfortably and it wasn't comfortable.”
Badshot Lea start their league campaign at home to Farnham Town on Saturday (3pm), and Smith is expecting a tough test.
“It will be a very tough game because we know what they're about,” said Smith. “They're looking to win the league so we're going to have to be right on it.”
