Aldershot & Farnham (A&F) Hockey Club’s ladies’ first team fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Woking in the South East Women’s Premier Division.
Both sides started with high energy levels, but Woking made the slightly better start. Woking won a short corner, and despite a well-drilled defensive routine by A&F a deflection gave a visiting forward a brilliant opportunity – which they converted to put Woking 1-0 up.
The Shots regrouped and started feeding wide with brilliant connection between defence and attack to allow relief between the lines. The relentless efforts won three consecutive short corners, however A&F didn’t come away with a goal. The Shots continued to battle hard with some good balls up the line from player-of-the-match Laura Gibson and a solid short-corner defence when Woking’s press tested A&F.
Fiona Stewart did a good job picking up the ball from defence and distributing to the forwards. Woking gave the Shots no time on the ball and A&F were constantly under pressure, but the defence held strong with Louise Laws making strong tackles.
Woking continued the pressure all the way until the half-time whistle.
A&F started the second half started brightly. The forwards worked tirelessly, but Woking’s defence was tight.
Woking built an attack through the centre of the pitch. Keeper Lucy Cochrane came out to smother the attack, but Woking worked the ball around her and went two goals ahead.
Sofia Fielding won a couple of penalty corners for A&F, but the goal would not arrive.
Woking then scored a superb third goal with a reverse-stick shot on the turn.
