Four teenage boys remain in custody following a fight in an Alton supermarket which left a man with a suspected stab wound and staff frightened for their lives.

Police were called to Waitrose around 7.30pm on Friday to reports of youths smashing bottles and fighting inside the Station Road store.

Supermarket staff spoke of being “scared stiff” with parts of the store being trashed and “smashed bottles and blood all over the place”.

A 23-year-old man was taken to hospital with a suspected stab wound – his injuries were not life-threatening – while there were reports of a further altercation in the adjacent station car park.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and affray while four teenage boys, all under the age of 18, were arrested.

A 13-year-old boy and two boys aged 15 were arrested on suspicion of affray while a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The five arrested all come from Alton and remain in custody at the time of writing, with the store remaining closed for much of the weekend.
