THREE students from Treloar’s took time out from their lessons last week to visit Alton Community Cupboard with a donation of food hampers made up from donations collected during the college’s harvest festival celebrations.
Daisy Garguilo, Ella Badrudin and Ryan Devereux were in Alton town centre as part of their community skills training.
The hampers will be given out on Christmas Eve when the Community Cupboard is hosting a special late night opening from 8pm to 10pm to help support local families and redistribute all the Christmas food which would otherwise be wasted.
A Treloar’s spokeswoman said: "Trips like these are essential to give our students the skills and confidence to live as independently as possible. Our students were happy to make a contribution to our community and enjoyed visiting and learning more about this fantastic community project."
The Community Cupboard opened in Alton shortly before Christmas 2019, and was an immediate hit, sharing food that would otherwise be thrown away. Anyone can go along and collect produce which would otherwise be wasted as it’s past its best before date. The food is collected by a team of volunteers from local supermarkets and distributed to over 140 families each week.
Alton Community Cupboard is based at 3 Westbrook Walk, near WH Smith and is open six days a week from 11.30am to 1pm. The aim is purely to reduce food waste, and it’s always free. For more information email: [email protected]
