More than 80 Selborne residents have become partners in a soon-to-open community-owned and run shop.

About a year ago the village shop that had been there for more than 30 years, closed and the premises sold.

But now 83 village residents have bought shares in a new community-owned shop soon to open in the same premises.

A spokesman for the project committee said: “With residents prepared to invest their own money in this scheme, the village is definitely behind this long-term sustainable project.

“It will provide a full range of products and services such as dry cleaning, parcel drop-off and deliveries according to the community needs. A village noticeboard and an informal free social meeting place will further enhance its attraction.

“There will be plenty of space to stock a range of products at varied prices to suit everyone, and work with the food bank is also planned.”

The community-run shop will be open seven days a week, and there are also hopes to reopen the Post Office counter – albeit not initially.

The spokesman added: “Although the share scheme closed on July 31, the committee would very much welcome donations, particularly from local businesses who support the concept of a community-owned and community-run shop and may wish to work with us.”
