AS the ballot places for next year’s London Marathon are announced, the RSPCA is asking runners to take on the challenge for Team Animal.

More than 40,000 people took part in the 26.2-mile run last year, among them was RSPCA inspector Anthony Pulfer. From rescuing animals in London on a daily basis to being one of the faces of Channel 5’s Dog Rescuers with Alan Davies, Mr Pulfer has completed the epic challenge for the RSPCA four times.

He said: “You never get used to the excitement on the day and knowing that every penny and every pound you make goes toward helping animals.

“It’s a cause that is very close to my heart and running through the streets of London, which is my patch, gives me extra inspiration to carry on. Team Animal offers great support to help you fundraise as well as training advice.

“The London Marathon has a fantastic atmosphere and having Team Animal on the sidelines cheering you on is just a great feeling.”

The RSPCA is funded entirely by public donations and relies on support to continue helping animals most in need. The charity receives a call every 27 seconds and investigates more than 400 allegations of animal cruelty every day.

It has a number of guaranteed places in the marathon but also encourages those who have their own place confirmed this week to consider joining Team Animal as well.

The London Marathon is on April 22.
