A restoration project in Chawton has been shortlisted for a design award as interest grows in another village landmark.

The shortlist for the South Downs Design Award has been confirmed with The Dower House being one of three East Hampshire properties to make the final cut.

The 15th century building is looking its best for centuries thanks to an “extensive programme of repair and conservation work” which has included the removal of “unsympathetic additions”.

The project is one of four shortlisted for the Conservation title with the Hocking House eco-home in Petersfield and New Temple Complex in Liss being nominated for the Residential and Non-Residential titles, respectively.

A total of 16 “high calibre” projects were shortlisted with the winner being crowned at an awards ceremony in Midhurst on October 2.

There’s also a ‘People’s Choice Award’ with September 6 being the deadline for votes, visit www.southdowns.gov.uk for more details about the nominees.

Meanwhile, a scheme to upgrade Dyers Barn at Chawton House has received more than £10,000 in Rural Grant funding from EHDC.

The Grow Up! handout funded a solar power generator and power bank, folding wooden chairs, lighting, signage, security and Wi-Fi.

The upgrade will make a “huge difference” to the barn and its ability to host weddings and events, while Cllr Robert Mocatta is proud EHDC has been able to support Chawton House.

He said: “The funding will enable Chawton House to bring in additional opportunity and revenue, adding value to residents, community groups and businesses locally.”
