With tops and trousers for just a few quid, and outfits for under a tenner, it’s no wonder Phyllis Tuckwell’s monthly kilo sales have been so popular.
Held at the hospice’s new Retail Centre in Invincible Road in Farnborough, the sales offer rails of quality second-hand men’s, ladies’ and children’s clothes for shoppers to browse through, all priced by weight.
The lighter the clothes, the less you pay!
So how do kilo sales work? It’s easy. Simply look through the rails of clothes, shoes and accessories, pop your chosen items into your bag, and bring it to the checkout to be weighed.
You’ll be charged £7.50 per kilo, regardless of the number, brand or type of the items.
Depending on the weight of what you’ve chosen, a kilo can give you several whole outfits or a few special pieces, but either way items are usually at least a third of the price you would normally pay in a shop.
You may even spot a vintage piece in there and snap up a real bargain!
All of the money raised through these sales will go towards helping fund the supportive and end of life care which Phyllis Tuckwell provides for patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer.
Since opening its new Retail Centre, Phylis Tuckwell has held seven kilo sales, selling over 15,000 items and raising over £25,000.
This is enough to cover the cost of its Living Well Day Services for over two weeks.
Through these services, patients can see doctors, nurses, therapists, counsellors and welfare advisors, and attend group sessions where they can find support to help them manage living everyday life with their illness.
“Pre-loved fashion kilo sales are a great way to refresh your wardrobe for a fraction of the price you’d pay on the high street,” said Barry Young, head of retail at Phyllis Tuckwell.
“An average outfit can be purchased for as little as £3.75, and can include a pair of shoes, bottoms and a top or jacket. As well as getting some great value clothing, you’ll also be shopping sustainably, as purchasing preloved clothing greatly reduces the number of items which go to landfill.”
Phyllis Tuckwell’s kilo sales are held from 9.30am to 4.30pm on the first Saturday of the month, and its next ones will take place on October 7, November 4 and December 2.
If you’re planning on checking them out, here are a few top tips for getting the best of the bargains:
- Turn up early to get first pick of the real treasures, and bring your own bag to pop your goodies into.
- Wear something close fitting, such as leggings, a t-shirt, and a pair of easy to slip on and off shoes, so you can try items on over your clothes to check if they fit.
- You could even weigh some of your own clothes at home, so you have an idea of what certain items will cost, and you can keep an eye on your spending as you go.
- But most of all, have a good time and remember, every penny you spend will help Phyllis Tuckwell to provide vital hospice care in your local community.
