Athletes will be taking the high road – or should that be the trunk road? – to Holybourne this weekend as the village will host an iconic Scottish event.
Holybourne will host its first Highland Games this Saturday in a fundraiser for the cricket club and the 8th Alton Scouts.
Their version of the games will include tossing the caber along with a tug-of-war and equivalent of the hammer throw. There will be six activities based on original games.
You don’t have to be a super-strong athlete built on oats and haggis to compete as organisers Scott Darroch and Dan Miles just want villagers to have some fun.
“Dan and I were having a drink and talking about fundraising and we were working through ridiculous ideas,” said Mr Darroch, chieftan of the games.
“We talked about the possibility of having the lowest elevation Highland Games in history and the next morning Dan said ‘that’s an excellent idea’, so we’re doing it.”
Holybourne’s Highland Fling will begin at 3pm at the cricket ground with registration for competitions opening at 2.30pm. Awards will be presented at 6pm while there will be more flinging from 7pm as a ceilidh will be held, with a caller leading Scottish country dances.
Foor and drink will be available at the event with proceeds going towards a replacement artificial wicket and permanent netting at the cricket club.
Tickets range from free entry to £9, for more details look for Holybourne’s Highland Fling at www.eventbrite.co.uk
