EAST Hampshire District Council has granted permission for the construction of three new homes and flexible commercial space following demolition of the Hardware Stores in Medstead High Street.

While welcomed by Medstead Parish Council as the replacement of a current ‘eyesore’, local objectors had expressed concern the application by Local Homes Ltd would represent over-development in the centre of the village, opposite the Grade II listed church, and in a style which would be out of keeping with the surrounding area.

One objector argued the “form and appearance” of the proposed plan would do little towards “making a positive contribution to the overall appearance of the area” and only reinforce the impact the new development would have, in terms of positioning, style, height and layout, on the surrounding buildings.

There was concern, too, over what some viewed as insufficient off-road parking provision on what is a very busy street and junction.

The proposal will provide two three-bed houses and one one-bed flat.
