People who feel the excesses of the festive season have left them wondering if there is a better way to live their life are invited to an Alton Climate Action Network meeting at Alton Community Centre on January 11 from 3pm to 4.30pm.

Volunteers from three of ACAN’s groups will be there to talk about what they do and encourage people to consider actions they could take to address biodiversity loss and sustainable eating.

AVLAN - Alton and Villages Local Action for Nature - will be demonstrating ways to welcome wildlife into the garden and be part of its Greening Alton project.

ALFI - the Alton Local Food Initiative - can help with tips on growing fruit and vegetables and will be reminding everyone to help themselves to the produce it grows in plots all over town.

Sustainabites - Alton Sustainable Eating - focuses on raising awareness of the benefits, for people and the planet, of eating more plant-based food.

It offers to bring plant-based nibbles to people’s meetings and will be providing the refreshments at the January 11 event to add to the friendly welcome on offer.

It will also invite people to attend its Eating For Tomorrow dinner and film screening on January 25 from 6.15pm at the Alton Maltings Centre.

This will include a screening of a documentary narrated by Kate Winslet about the true impact of people’s food choices on the planet and the benefits for everyone of including more beans and greens in their diet.

A spokesperson said: “Included in the ticket price - a mere £10, unwaged £5 - is a plant-based meal provided by the wonderful Jo’s Kitchen.

“The film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr Shireen Kassam, the founder of Plant-Based Health Professionals, who is featured in the documentary.

“What better way to start the new year.”
