THREE Alton College students participated in the annual Maths Olympiad for Girls – with one achieving a certificate of distinction.
Jasmine Anwar (previously at Weydon School, Farnham), Lisa Winkler (Bohunt School at Liphook) and Charlotte Cranmer (Mill Chase Academy at Bordon) undertook the challenge which lasts two-and-a-half hours and consists of five involved mathematical problems for which full written solutions are required.
The Olympiad is organised to encourage and inspire as many girls as possible to get involved in advanced problem solving.
Dr David Lynch, curriculum manager for maths at Alton College, said: “We are delighted that these three students have performed so well in the Maths Olympiad for Girls. It is designed to encourage and inspire as many girls as possible to get involved in advanced mathematical problem solving, and at Alton College we totally agree with these aims.
“Each year we have female (and male) students applying to universities to do maths degrees and these three girls are no exception. Charlotte is applying to do a maths degree, Jasmine has applied to Oxford University for maths and philosophy, and Lisa has applied to study natural sciences at Cambridge University.”
Both Jasmine and Lisa received a Certificate of Participation for their efforts in the Olympiad, with Lisa missing out on a certificate of distinction by just one mark. Charlotte was not only awarded a certificate of distinction (for scoring 12+) but also gained an “honourable mention” for scoring 10 out of 10 on one of the questions.
