A golden anniversary has been celebrated as a building society has cemented its place in Alton town centre.
Newbury Building Society brought out the cake and balloons last Monday (February 17) to mark 50 years of trading on the High Street.
The NBS opened originally opened its doors next door at 49 High Street in 1975, becoming the society’s most southernmost branch until the opening of Winchester in 2013. It moved to its current home at number 47 in 1987.
Dean Scott, director of proposition and distribution, who oversees the society’s branch strategy, said: “Over 6,000 bank and building society branches have closed in the last 10 years, with more than 200 scheduled to close this year.
“In a climate where closure notices on branch windows are becoming commonplace, we’re extremely proud of our longevity and commitment to the high street, which remains as strong today as it was when Alton opened in 1975.

“I’d like to thank the whole Alton team – past and present – and our loyal members, for continuing to choose Newbury. Happy birthday, Alton branch!”
In the 50 years since opening, the branch has been involved in community programmes, supporting local events and charities including Help for Heroes, Alton Foodbank, Alton Regency Week, and Alton Climate Action Network.
Julie Harness, branch manager, said: “I am so proud to work at the branch and of the community impact we’ve had over the years in the town.
“I have been lucky enough to work with great people during my years at Alton, working together to deliver the best service for our customers, through the good times and the tough.
“I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ on behalf of the branch to everyone who came along to celebrate 50 years of Newbury Building Society in the wonderful community of Alton.”
