“Just give it a try and complete something.”
That’s the advice an Alton singer-songwriter has given to aspiring musicians on the cusp of her latest single release.
Becky Brown is on the promotional trail as she’s just about to release I wish you well from her forthcoming EP, Drinking in the sunlight.
The Bentley-born musician, who moved to Alton seven years ago, performs regularly in the town with The Railway Arms being a popular spot. She also supported Tom Bright at Goldfinch Books and most recently played at the Alton Arts Festival 'Party in the Park.'
Becky attributes the roots of her success to two pianists who she learned so much from.
She said: “I started learning the piano at Bentley Primary school, having private lessons with Mark Hoare, and continued with Tim Sturt at Eggars. They were both incredible.”
She picked up a guitar and started songwriting in her teens and hasn’t stropped since.
In 2023, she started working with multi-instrumentalist and producer Joe Wright, also from Alton, and released her first EP Gone. This year she followed this with Bubbles and Just Met You, both singles from Drinking in the sunlight.
She advises anyone wanting to songwriting to “embrace imperfection” as there’s no right or wrong.
She said: “It’s a bit like learning to draw or paint as you wouldn’t expect a masterpiece on first try!
“Making connections with other musicians is a really important. Maybe even start a band!”
