Altonians have been urged to give boredom the boot this October by signing up for the Autumn Walking Festival.

The much-loved event organised by Alton Town Council and Walk Alton will take place from October 14 and 20 with a curated selection of new routes and firm favourites to choose from.

There’s something for experienced hikers and casual strollers alike with additions including a walk to the South Downs Roastery through beautiful countryside and autumnal foliage.

“The festival is a celebration of the beautiful walks in and around Alton and the joy of walking together, so get your boots ready for another fantastic week,” said town mayor, Cllr Annette Eyre.

“I’d also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for their generous support, as without them this festival wouldn’t be possible. A special thank you to Walk Alton, all the walk leaders and who have dedicated their time and energy to organising the walks.”

Highlights of the week will include an Historic Alton Trail and Literary Walk with their Jane Austen links, while the short history and remnants of the Basingstoke & Alton Light Railway will be explored in the Alton Lost Railways walk.

Ancient woodland and relics of the Hampshire hop-growing industry will be explored in the Getting To Know The Hangers walk between East Worldham and Wick Hill Farm in a saunter through amazing countryside.
