Shortfield Common in Frensham is aflutter with butterfly drama this summer, with some species soaring and others stumbling in numbers.

Meadow Browns are riding high, showing off with 29 spotted from June 17 to 23, followed by 23 more in the next week, and 27 gracing the scene from July 1 to 7. They’re dancing above last year’s count, stealing the show.

In contrast, Marbled Whites are facing a tough time, with just three sightings from June 24 to July 7 – a far cry from their heyday.

There was, though, a surprise cameo – 16 Small Coppers emerged, a rare warm-weather treat usually seen in smaller squads.

Four Small Whites also popped up from June 24 to July 7, but the beloved Holly and Common Blue butterflies seem to be on vacation.

Get batty on a night walk at Bealeswood Common

Frensham's Bealeswood Wildlife Recording Group is running more walking sessions from August until October – all of which are free to join.

The first of three planned walks is taking place tomorrow (Friday) from 8.15pm to 10pm. This will follow a Bats at Sunset theme on Bealeswood Common itself, walking to Frensham Mill. Take a torch.

The next event will also take place on the common on Saturday, September 2 from 9.30am to 11am, centred around small mammals.

Finally on October 13, from 11am to 12.30pm there will be a fungi trek.
