The Crown Hotel in Alton High Street has closed - for now.

In a statement issued on February 9, landlady Katie Collingborn said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of The Crown/Bomb Bar, effective on Wednesday, February 12.

“Despite our best efforts to keep the business running, unfortunately due to Steve’s [landlord’s] health issues him and his family have decided it’s time for him to step away from the business.

“We are incredibly thankful for the support from our community, friends and family, which has meant the world to us over the years. I truly hope a new landlord will step in very soon, and I wish them all the best.

“On a personal note, saying goodbye after 23 years at The Crown is not an easy thing to do, as this place has been a significant part of my life, but I’m looking forward to my new chapter.

“Alton, I can't thank you enough for the memories we've shared; they will remain with me forever. If only these walls could tell their tales.

“Please join us for a farewell drink on Tuesday evening [February 11] before we finally close our doors until the new owners take over.

“Unfortunately we currently don’t know the date on which they will reopen, but I’m sure they will update you all as soon as they know. Regards, Katie.”

The Crown has operated as a 14-room hotel and pub for more than 450 years.
