A Bordon family has been "saved" by the generosity of the Bordon, Liphook, and Haslemere community after facing an unexpected £2,500 vet bill for their dog, Edith.
Edith was rescued after being abandoned at a factory with her siblings. The Nicholls family adopted Edith after falling in love with her. But, in May, Edith became seriously ill and was diagnosed with leishmaniasis, a rare, flea-borne disease that affects the tissue and organs.
Despite having a premium pet insurance plan, the family was devastated to learn that leishmaniasis was excluded from coverage.
“We were suddenly slapped with a huge £2,500 bill we just couldn’t afford,” said Laura Nicholls. “We didn’t know what to do. Vets for Pets were really understanding and patient but even after we took out a credit card and other loans, we were still short.”
The family turned to the community for help by launching a GoFundMe page.
At first, Laura Nicholls' husband was hesitant about asking for donations, but the family was left with no other option. To their relief, donations began to pour in after they shared their plea on local community boards. The fundraiser reached £915, with one anonymous donor contributing an incredible £850.
“You know when your world is falling down around you? It’s like everyone said, don’t worry, and saved us. I am so thankful there aren’t really words,” said Laura.
Thanks to the support, Edith, who turned one in June, has regained her health and is once again enjoying life as a playful pup.
