Alton Morris is holding taster nights for people who are interested in Morris dancing.

They will be held at Alton Infant School in Victoria Road, Alton, on October 13 and 20 at 7.30pm (musicians) and 8pm (dancers).

Alton Morris had a successful summer dancing at many folk festivals in the south of England, including Oxford, Chippenham, Swanage and Sidmouth.

They also danced in and around the town outside local pubs, and at town events like the Classic Car Day and Alton Regency Day.

Jan Treacher-Evans, one of the two dance teachers, said: “All of the six new dancers who joined last year learnt between three and eight dances and were able to dance out all season.

“We will be increasing their repertoire this year, while introducing the new recruits to some of our simpler dances. People with previous experience as well as total beginners are all welcome. We practise on Friday nights until May and then dance out during the summer. Come along and see if you like it on a taster night, there’s even cake!”

Alton Morris is also dancing at the Blackmoor Apple Tasting Day on Sunday at 12.30pm and 1.30pm. All are welcome to have a chat with members of the team – known as a side – regarding the practice season.

No dance experience is necessary but it would be helpful if musicians had a rudimentary grasp of their chosen instrument. They can play by ear or from music, and there are music practices before the dance practices. Brass players are especially welcome.

A spokesperson added: “All the new people who joined last October, either as a dancer or a musician, have taken part and have had the best time!”
