Farnham Town assistant manager Jimmy Hibburt was pleased with his side’s attitude after they won 2-0 at home to Tooting & Mitcham United in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Thursday evening.

Goals from Lewis Flatman and Dean Rule gave the champions the three points in front of a crowd of 234 at The Memorial Ground and left Farnham one game away from an unbeaten league campaign.

“The boys put in a real shift,” said Hibburt. “For the first 15 minutes we controlled the game. It was obvious that Tooting had come to sit in and try to catch us on the counter. After 15 minutes we were really happy and then we lost our way a little bit. We seemed to force it a little bit more. The two tens – the Flatman role and the Rule role – are vitally important for us and they tended to go a little bit too high too quickly. Then we managed to get them back in and Flatman picked up in that ten position and scored from outside the area – which was a good finish – and then we found our way.

“We were saying at half-time it was a little bit disappointing in terms of us not keeping our shape and being that little bit too eager – a little bit too keen to score – but I never felt a threat from them. I think they didn't get enough bodies close to their forward when they won the ball back so we were quite comfortable in that area. I can’t remember Pat Nash doing anything barring a couple of crosses here and there. The second goal allowed us to relax and see the game out and manage the legs for Saturday. Dean’s got this ability to drift past players and it’s good that he got on the scoresheet.”

Next up for Farnham is a trip to Tooting & Mitcham United in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Saturday afternoon (3pm). Hibburt is looking forward to the game and wants his side to complete an unbeaten league campaign.

“It will be interesting to see how they (Tooting) set up – but it’s a nice ground over there,” said Hibburt. “It’s quite a big pitch over there. One more to go, and then we’ve got a cup final to enjoy.”

Farnham will finish their season when they face Isthmian League South Central Division outfit South Park (Reigate) in the Surrey Senior Cup final at Meadowbank Football Ground in Dorking next Wednesday evening (May 1), and Hibburt is looking forward to the test.

“It will be a good test and it will be nice to see where we’re at,” said Hibburt. “Where the boys have played so many games recently we’ve got to recover well. The boys have got to look after their bodies and prepare well for Wednesday.”
